| Thar-Nak-Yak : Zopkios Ridge North Faces (Summer) Below is a description of the photograph you were looking for, and the circumstances surrounding the photo. Photographer: Drew Brayshaw Technical: Fuji Sensia 100; Pentax Espio95WR Technical: Fuji Sensia 100; Pentax Espio95WR Caption: North faces on Zopkios Ridge. Story: The north face of Thar is bushy and home to the "Fools Errand". The north face of Nak is loose. An easier option to traversing Nak if climbing Yak via the Nak-Thar col (my opinion is that this is much more aesthetic than slogging up the climbers' descent trail), is to descend from the col on the visible scree, traverse under Nak's N face, then 3rd class up the N ridge of the bump between Nak and Yak to regain the ridge crest. That's the way Chris and I did it in 1990 and as I recall it was a lot of fun. As far as I know the north face of Yak is still unclimbed despite a couple of attempts. It's supposed to be a real granola bowl too. Rick Cox, Gary Wolkoff, Guy Edwards have all backed off in the stories I have heard. I think the highest attempt got about 2/3 of the way up. Way, way in the distance behind Yak (at right) you can see Cathedral Ridge (Grimface etc), Cathedral Mountain and Amphitheater. To see the actual photo you must be a Paid Member |
